Marmion Foreshore Car Park sits between the Marmion Angling & Aquatic Club, Marmion Beach and the busy and popular coastal tourist strip of West Coast Drive.
The carpark underwent a major redesign which improved accessibility to the beach and upgraded the parking capacity from 42 to 82 bays.
With the existing car park located between the Angling Club to the South, the Dunes to the North, the Indian Ocean to the West and the busy road to the East, there were limited options and area within which to extend the car park. The structure was designed to extend over the existing sea wall protection installed 20 years ago.
The original proposal included construction of insitu reinforced concrete cantilever beams and a significant piled retaining structure. Dallcon worked with the Client and Engineer designing and manufacturing a precast alternative which replaced these elements and effectively reduced the construction timeframe.
These precast beams also assisted the project to have less environmental impact within the dune system and generated significantly less impact on surrounding stakeholders.
This project was the winner of the 2016 CCF Earth Award (Category 2). It was recognised for its innovative solution, benefit to the client and the minimal impact of the works on adjacent neighbours and the public.
