Concrete Retaining Wall Systems

Retaining wall systems withstand the lateral pressure of soil and retain materials on one side. Simply put, retaining wall blocks hold soil behind them. You use retaining wall systems to manage soil between two different elevations, often in areas of undesirable slopes or where the landscape needs shaping.

Apart from retaining soil, they also protect against erosion and create consistently levelled areas in a landscape project. If you consider factors such as drainage, soil conditions and proximity to other structures before building, your retaining wall systems can last longer and be more effective.

Concrete retaining wall blocks provide load-bearing strength for added safety for long-term infrastructure and operations. Commonly used in commercial projects, a good precast concrete retaining wall ensures the worksite is stable and safe for work. You can also use them as garden retaining wall systems, depending on the situation.

A well-designed and installed retaining wall prevents retained materials from moving downslope. As such, it’s essential to have a proper drainage system to limit the pressure on the wall. This reduces the force exerted and improves material stability behind the wall.

Dallcon’s precast concrete solutions suit numerous applications and are of high quality. They are specifically designed to be durable and resist harsh conditions. You have access to a myriad of standard sizes along with custom-sized options. Our experience in supplying products to various projects and clients has given a better understanding of your specialised needs.

Concrete Retaining Wall Blocks – Technical Specifications

Our standard concrete retaining wall blocks have the following specs:

  • Height: The height ranges from 0.6m to 5m.
  • Width: The width ranges from 1.2m to 2.4m.

Tapered blocks and stepped blocks are available with the following types of finish:

  • Concrete Finish
  • Limestone Finish
  • Cream Concrete Finish

Related Products

We offer a wide range of custom precast concrete products along with concrete retaining wall blocks. Here are some related products, all of which are fully engineer approved and heavily reinforced to engineer requirements:

  • L-Blocks: Precast concrete L-blocks have a variety of uses, although they are generally used for containing and retaining purposes.
  • T-Blocks: Concrete T-blocks can also be used in various ways, especially with customised sizes and styles, depending on your business needs.
  • Headwalls: Concrete headwalls are walls built at a pipe inlet, where drainage pipes that discharge into open watercourses connect.

Other Types of Retaining Wall Blocks

Anchored Retaining Wall

Cable rods or wires are driven deep into the earth to support anchored retaining walls. It’s why this is also known as the tie-back system. These rods or wires anchor the raised walls into place and provide support.

Anchored retaining wall systems use tension supports to resist the soil pressure. The maximum height of these retaining walls is subject almost entirely to the site and the soil condition.

They are often used when you need to build high retaining walls or if there are space constraints. They have a smaller footprint than other designs and are constructed below the wall system where loose soil is present. Cables that are anchored deep within the soil or rock provide the additional support required for the wall’s stability.

Reinforced Soil Wall

Reinforced soil walls are mechanically stabilised earth walls. With the help of precast segmental blocks that create a raised wall-like structure, they restrain material and resist the pressure of the soil that you intend to hold back.

These retaining wall blocks are made of robust steel settled in layers within a controlled granular fill. They are often made inclined at an angle of 70 degrees or higher. These precast segmental blocks create a raised wall-like structure to reinforce or retain soil.

Reinforced soil walls are the most cost-effective solution to retaining walls and are very flexible compared to conventional gravity structures. You can adapt them to suit a wide range of conditions.

Cantilever Retaining Wall

Precast concrete, prestressed concrete, or reinforced concrete is used to construct cantilever retaining wall blocks. They have steel bars that run through the concrete or masonry retaining wall. The bars convert horizontal pressures from behind the wall to vertical forces on the ground below. The wall does not tip forward due to the weight of the soil above the base slab.

Cantilever retaining walls have a concrete base slab and a vertical stem divided into two parts, a heel slab and a toe slab. You can get them in sizes of up to 10 metres tall, and they retain soil well since they connect to the foundation.

Hybrid Retaining Wall Systems

Also called composite retaining walls, hybrid wall systems implement heavy mass and robust reinforcement for stability and durability. They comprise a lower mechanically stabilised earth wall (MSEW) and a lower soil nail wall (SNW) on top. You typically use them in combined fill-and-cut wall sections, such as in road widening.

Hybrid systems have walls layered upon each other to reach the required height. One significant advantage of using them is in the prevention of sinkholes. They also reduce maintenance and prevent erosion.

Retaining Walls in Perth and WA

Dallcon specialises in manufacturing world-class structural retaining walls for use in heavy civil and mining industries. These can also be used as garden retaining wall systems. We provide aesthetic patterns and various shades that you can choose to your preference.

Our concrete retaining wall panels are engineer approved. We have designed them to effectively stabilise a slope and retain any material such as rock or soil behind them. Our structures also accommodate heavy loads, impact, and extreme temperature and weather conditions.
